Why this talk? Why now?
People are “miserable” at work
According to recent studies conducted by Gallup, 60% of people are emotionally detached at work and 19% are miserable.
When 6 out of 10 people are emotionally detached and 1 out of every 5 are miserable, there’s a problem. With a problem so widespread, you would think the solution must be far out of reach or impractical.
Nothing could be further from the truth. We could eliminate the misery and get people re-engaged with a few small shifts in how we think and how we behave.
“People don’t leave jobs, they leave managers”
Year after year, people leave their jobs for three reasons more than anything else:
- they don’t like their managers
- they’re not paid enough
- they don’t see opportunities for advancement
Paying people more is straightforward…just do it. As for the other two, that’s why you need to be in the audience for this talk.
People Yearn For More
Research from Great Place To Work® indicates the following three questions will predict workplace turnover, regardless of generation or job type:
- Are you proud of where you work?
- Do you find meaning in your work?
- Do you have fun at work?
Strangely, we don’t train and assess managers on any of that.
Don’t worry if you don’t know where to start… I do.
