Today, I’ll be giving a guest lecture / lunch-n-learn to a cohort of art students at Studio Incamminati, a school for contemporary realist art.
The presentation will be:
Modern Marketing: What artists need to know.
In this presentation I’ll be covering the basics of digital marketing including social media, content marketing, SEO and more…
If you’d like a copy of the slides and the accompanying recommendations, all you have to do is subscribe and leave a comment on this post and tell me one thing:
What is your best tip for how artists should market themselves?
Jimmy Matorin says
Position yourself as a Global Changemaker.
Jon Steiert says
I would think that artists need to be present on Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube from a social perspective. Beyond the obvious social networks, using sites like Behance and Dribbble are smart resources for them to use. If they have pieces they’re trying to sell, Etsy is clearly the best marketplace for them to share their pieces.
Jeff Gibbard says
Jon, I’m really glad you commented on this. After I saw your comment, I actually went back into the slides and added Behance and Dribbble, and a section for selling direct using Etsy, eBay and website platforms.
Matt says
Make sure your presence online (website, social, etc.) is reflective of the type of art your produce. This will bring consistency to your brand, and also allow people to understand what you’re all about.
Jeff Gibbard says
Great tip. You’d be amazed how many artists think they can get by without a website. And while they can, they are missing so much opportunity.

Hmm…as a mixed/multimedia artist I find myself reflecting on my various areas of interest and struggle to find a “single” best tip:
Dance – I love Instagram and viewing video snippets from Martha Graham, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor and Dance Magazine
Visual Art – I dig into Blog Posts from Stewart Cubley and the Painting Experience
Poetry – Face Book brings me up close and personal to new poets, as well, as old friends.
As I write, I find my best tips would be to know your audience and share what truly turns you on (or maybe even turns you upside down), ignites your passion, and shines through whatever platform you select.
Jeff Gibbard says
This is interesting. As I read your comment, I was thinking of the various places I like to see those different art forms. I enjoy watching dance on Instagram, but also on Youtube. For visual art, I love Pinterest and Tumblr. For Poetry, one of my favorite poets crushes it on Instagram, and has recent begun using Anchor. I think Soundcloud is another great place to be for spoken word poetry (as opposed to written poetry). I think the point is exactly as you said, pick a platform, and let your passion shine through.
